A £29 million deal for Matthijs de Ligt, a top defender for Bayern Munich, is reportedly rejected by Manchester United, which is a little setback in their pursuit of the Dutchman.
Under new owners INEOS, United is presently going through a massive rebuild. Having already brought in two big-name players, their attention is now being directed toward other players who have the potential to be significant players down the road. Although it’s believed that Vincent Kompany’s team is rejecting their deal out of hand after falling more than £10 million short of their valuation, De Ligt is the ideal candidate to join their backline, and United are pushing forward with a deal after reportedly already giving the go-ahead for a move under former boss Erik ten Hag.

Despite Bayern rejecting their previous offer, Christian Falk reports that United has now made an offer of €35 million (£29 million) for De Ligt.
The Bundesliga powerhouses want a reported £43 million plus add-ons to release the Dutchman, and United may not be willing to pay given that other targets in important areas where they haven’t strengthened up front need to be addressed first. This is especially true given that Leny Yoro has already joined the team as a center-back option.
But Bayern are in a similar situation. The Bavarian team has already spent about €150 million (£129 million) this summer on signings, including Bryan Zaragoza, Horoki Ito, Michael Olise, and Joao Palhinha. Since they haven’t made any significant outlays yet, they will need to sell in order to make purchases during the transfer window.
The two teams’ negotiations are expected to continue, with United obviously eager to add a center back after their two unsuccessful bids for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite. Meanwhile, the De Ligt saga appears unlikely to end, even though the Dutchman gave the team his clearance to sign him in the summer.

De Ligt is a composed, strong, quick, and aerial player who possesses all the qualities a team could ask for in a modern center back. With Raphael Varane leaving and rumors pointing to Victor Lindelof as his replacement at Old Trafford, a lineup that includes De Ligt, Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, and Harry Maguire not only sets United up for the long term but also for the near future.
In the long run, Branthwaite would be a great addition, but Yoro and De Ligt could step in and take over for Maguire for a while until his time comes to go.
