Going “green” isn’t just a new concept in the automotive aftermarket, and in the early 1990s, HOT ROD got involved in preserving a piece of American history when it saved a1967 Chevy Camarofrom the crusher. At the time, CARB had launched a program that allowed companies to recycle old vehicles in exchange for smog credits, something many gas and oil companies rushed to take advantage of. Long story short, the program didn’t yield any measurable improvements and hurt the old car population in the process. However, it led to one of HOT ROD’s most famous project cars: theCrusher Camaro. The Crusher is a fixture in David Freiburger’s personal fleet of cars and has appeared on many MotorTrend TV shows. The team is still performing makeovers on the first-gen Camaro and even running it down the dragstrip from time to time. This story details where it all began for the famed project vehicle.
