Austin Dillon came from four to five car lengths back and put Joey Logano into the wall, just as he was about to win the Cook Out 400 at Richmond on Sunday.
Logano became furious by that and revved his engine near Dillon’s family while on pit road. NASCAR penalized him $50,000 on Wednesday after deeming his behavior intolerable. NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin made a visit on “Dale Jr. Download” this week. He acknowledged that the fine was necessary to prevent similar situations on pit road after races, even if he thought it was excessive.
Martin remarked, “I think we need to keep safety in mind.” “In my opinion, Joey was fine with it since it was a safety concern, and I fully understand that. However, it’s a bit excessive. Therefore, the benefit of imposing a hefty fine for such an offense is that it discourages similar behavior in the future. To be honest, I thought that $50,000 fine was excessive for what he did. It was both his and Joey’s responsibility to have known better. However, you knew that you were in charge of Joey’s mind if you were inside it. While Joey was aware that he wouldn’t drive someone over, others are unaware of this.
“And it deters it if you go at it with an excessive penalty like what I believe that was.” That is not necessary. There is absolutely no need for anyone to ever suffer harm. There should be no interaction on the racetrack when it ends, and there most definitely shouldn’t be any interaction on pit road either. These guys need to be kept protected. Since we implemented the pit road speed limit twenty years ago, NASCAR has performed admirably. After the race, you cannot be acting out of control on pit road. Therefore, I believe they made the right decision there.
Regarding Joey Logano’s sentence, Elton Sawyer said, “He knows better.”
Logano and his group are not contesting the fine, FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass reports. NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer gave an explanation for the need for the $50,000 penalties.
Sawyer remarked, “That’s exactly right, and I completely understand the emotion of what happened there. Joey’s a champion.” “He is more knowledgeable. We simply had to do a better job of making sure we’re protecting our families, the children, and our fans that are present because there are just too many people out there, which is a problem on our end.
“Security and our NASCAR officials are still present, even with them behind the hot side. The race teams receive a weekly communication advising them to exercise caution when approaching pit road after a race and capturing all vehicles. This particular car was clearly one of them, and we have consistently enforced this call on pit road, which is why Joey’s penalty was as severe as it was.
