Breaking News:New York firefighters head to Ireland for poignant 9/11 tribute as devastating new death toll comes to light

The FDNY is riding across the nation in remembrance of 9/11 by bike to Ireland. A hundred New York City firefighters, both active and retired, are getting ready to pedal 223 miles from the capital of Ireland to Kinsale, in the County Cork. The expedition is being organized by Friends of firemen, a non-profit organization that offers independent, private, and cost-free mental health counseling and wellness services to active and retired FDNY firemen and their families.

Former New York City fire commissioner and chairman Dan Nigro said to IrishStar.com, “On 9/11, I responded before the second plane hit the South Tower. I saw individuals leaping from rooftops and towers crumbling.

Though we knew it was in the hundreds, we were unsure of the exact number of members we lost. The days that followed were a haze. We were working to rescue people who were still trapped, battle the remaining fires, and reconstruct the department.
