Human skull found in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood, police say

KY LOUISVILLE (WDRB) — Thursday afternoon, someone discovered a human skull in the Portland neighborhood. Investigators looking into homicide and arson departed the scene shortly before 4 on Thursday afternoon, following reports from the workers hired to clear the wreckage that they had discovered a human skull in the center of the structure. Marvin Greenfield of Right Way Hauling stated, “And I had a couple of employees sifting through brick to get the trash out of it, and one of them happened across it.” The structure, or what’s left of it, is located at 16th Street’s north end, in the 1600 block of Northwestern Parkway. The building burned down in December of 2023.

The intensity of the fire caused the paint on the steel beneath the interstate to peel due to the heat from the flames. For a brief period, the fire department had to stop traffic on Interstate 64 east. There were other homeless camps in the vicinity, according to Louisville Fire at the time, and this was the building’s second fire. However, they stated that they didn’t think anyone was inside the structure.

After the structure was recently demolished, Right Way Hauling was called in to remove the wreckage. The skull was discovered just as the business was beginning to work on clearing the trash. Sorting through the rubble took several hours for the investigators. “That is what they are doing now, sifting through to see if they can find any more human remains or parts of the body,” added Greenfield. The skull was brought to the office of the Medical Examiner in an attempt to ascertain the precise cause of death as part of an ongoing inquiry into the death.
