Rhode Island man who faked his own death facing life in jail after DNA match in Utah rape case

The ‘American Walter Mitty’, who faked his identity while on the run in the UK, could spend the rest of his life behind bars after his DN was found on an alleged rape victim 16 years ago.

Nicholas Rossi, who was deported earlier this year from Scotland to face charges in Utah, has now been linked to a further case as he appeared before a US judge. While in Britain, the American maintained his arrest was a case of mistaken identity since being detained in 2021.

But last week, his attorneys finally dropped his sham story as the first order for him to stand trial this month was made. Now Rossi, also known as Nicholas Alahverdian and his alleged alias Arthur Knight, is facing two rape charges dating back to 2008.

The first is now being heard in Utah court in a trial that began this week. Prosecutors allege Rossi raped a woman, 26, in Salt Lake County back in 2008. He’s accused of raping another woman, 21 and is suspected of several other attacks.

Rossi, 37, is originally from Rhode Island in the States but fled to the UK, firstly to Essex. While in Britain, he built the false persona of Arthur Knight, an Irish orphan now working as an academic living in Glasgow.
