Shootout at Yellowstone National Park leaves one dead

A shootout in Yellowstone National Park left a ranger injured and a person dead on Thursday morning after an encounter in the Canyon Village area.

No active threats remain, according to a press release from park officials.

Law enforcement responded to a report that an individual was making threats and had a firearm, in the central area of the national park. When rangers arrived, they made contact with the individual, and “there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” a press release said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is said to be leading the investigation with assistance from National Park Service special agents and the individual with whom law enforcement exchanged fire was pronounced dead.

The person’s identity has not been released.

One of the Yellowstone National Park rangers was injured during the incident and the press release provided no specifics for their injuries other than that they were in stable condition and flown to hospital.

Canyon Village is in the central area of the park, north of Yellowstone Lake and east of the Norris Geyser Basin.

The village area includes a ranger station, gas station, post office, visitor center as well as the Canyon Lodge and Cabins, a campground and several stores including a general store, adventure gear store and a picnic shop.

According to reporting by Cowboy State Daily, park superintendent Cam Sholly sent an email to park employees that numerous park rangers had been involved in the incident and that “this team did an amazing job today as you’ll learn when more details come out.”
