Tragically, Florence “Pancho” Barnes, a well-known aviation legend and well-loved performer, passed away suddenly at Los Angeles International Airport while demonstrating his aerial skills. At the time of the event, Barnes—who is well-known for his audacious feats and contributions to the aviation industry—was giving a public demonstration.
Barnes, 72, was taking part in an airshow to celebrate the centennial of LAX’s founding by doing a number of complex aerial acrobatics. Witnesses claimed that Barnes amazed the gathered crowd by doing a number of intricate manoeuvres, such as barrel rolls and loops, while operating his iconic vintage biplane. But not long after the show began, something went wrong.
