Two people were killed and one was injured Friday morning in Bend after deputies say the driver of an SUV clipped a commercial truck he was trying to pass and crashed.

The crash happened around 10:45 a.m. on Knott Road near Highway 97, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) said.

Deputies said a Dodge Durango was headed east at high speed when the driver tried passing the commercial truck traveling the same direction. The Durango crossed the double-yellow lines, but then clipped the truck when trying to get back into the correct lane — avoiding a collision with a pickup truck coming the opposite way.

The Durango went off the road and collided with a tree.

DCSO said the male driver and female passenger in front seat were killed. A male passenger in the back seat was trapped and had to be extracted. He was taken to St. Charles-Bend with serious injuries.

The sheriff’s office determined the driver of the Durango to be at fault.

The names of the victims were withheld until next-of-kin could be notified.
