Two killed in crash after police try to initiate traffic stop on suspect vehicle

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) —

An investigation is underway after two people were killed in a crash that took place following an attempted traffic stop in Asheville.

A press release from the Asheville Police Department (APD) says officers tried to initiate a traffic stop on a2021 Dodge Challenger early Saturday morning. APD says the vehicle matched the description of “a vehicle occupied by a suspect fleeing the scene of an assault that occurred downtown.”

While attempting to stop the vehicle, officers lost sight of the vehicle.

 

While searching the area, officers located the vehicle down an embankment on Hilliard Avenue. Officers then rendered aid to the trapped occupants until EMS arrived.

 

APD says the driver, Darriann Chantel Waters, 32, and passenger, Maurice Dijon Jones, 30, succumbed to their injuries on the scene; next of kin has been notified.

 

The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and will assist in the review.
