Crash closes part of Converse Street in Longmeadow

LONGMEADOW, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A car fire in Longmeadow has closed a portion of Converse Street.

The street is now closed from Dwight Road to Dickinson Street, and Redfern Street is also closed, which is causing some heavy traffic delays as people head home from the work day.

It took our crews about an extra 25 minutes to get to the scene because they were stuck in that stop and go traffic.

Now, fire officials say that this is all due to an accident where a car crashed into a telephone pole, resulting in that car catching on fire.

“Obviously hit the pole, the wires came down, and ignited the car,” said Longmeadow Fire Chief John Dearborne. “Passing by car pulled the occupant out of the car and he was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

The car is very charred and the telephone wires are down in the street.

Chief Dearborne told Western Mass News that the accident happened shortly after 3:20 p.m. He said that no one else was hurt besides the driver of the car.

Eversource officials told us that more than 100 customers are now without power. That number is down from around 1,900 originally, and Eversource crews are actively working on restoring those remaining customers.

Crews told us that they are currently waiting on a tow truck to come remove the car, and the road is expected to be closed for several hours, so plan your commute accordingly.

Police said that they are working on a plan to get the westbound side of the street opened up shortly.
