Driver killed, two passengers injured in one-car crash near Jefferson

A joyride Saturday night killed a driver and injured two passengers near Jefferson after the car hit a power pole, police said.

Nicolas J. Jolly, 19, of Jefferson, was driving Douglass Curtiss, 19, of Turner, and Juan Barrera, 19, of Jefferson, around 8:45 p.m. on Valley View Road SE eastbound from Duckflat Road SE, police said.

Both passengers told Marion County Sheriff’s Office investigators that Jolly was driving between 90 and 100 miles per hour and lost control of the car after speeding over a hill.

The car broke into two pieces on impact, with the entire front end of the car separated from the passenger compartment by more than 100 feet.

The driver’s airbag, in the separated front section of the car, was still intact in the steering wheel.

Jolly died at the scene.

Barrera was taken to Salem Hospital with serious injuries, police said, and Curtiss was treated for minor injuries.

Pacific Power responded to the downed power pole. The sheriff’s office did not know if any residents lost electricity due to the collision.

The occupants were wearing seatbelts, police said, and the car was not stolen. No other cars were involved in the crash.

The passengers told police they call Valley View Road “roller coas′ter hill.”
