Wreck happened in front of Burns High School

LAWNDALE, N.C. (WBTV) – Two students were killed and another was injured in a crash near the front of a Cleveland County high school on Wednesday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Jaelyn Abraham, 14, and Dequavious Hopper, 17, were identified as the students killed in the collision.

The wreck happened on Sept. 18 around 4 p.m. in front of Burns High School — located along East Stage Coach Trail in Lawndale.

Troopers said the three students were leaving the school in the same car when they were struck by a pickup truck. The teens had attempted to make a left turn onto Falls St., when they were hit head-on, troopers said.

The accident is currently being investigated and handled through the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. From a school standpoint, we will definitely have additional counselors at our middle and high school tomorrow to provide an extra layer of love and support for our students.”

Charges will not be filed from the collision, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Bernice Henderson, who lives in Lawndale, walked by the scene shortly after the crash. She said the whole community will be there to support the students’ families.

“Our hearts are with them, and our prayers, and all the support of the community,” Henderson said. “I don’t have kids in the school but as a part of the community it’s really, really sad, it’s terrible.”

The North Carolina State Patrol couldn’t say whether the teens were wearing seatbelts, as the crash is still under investigation.
