Troopers: One Killed in Haywood County Wreck

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. — Law enforcement confirmed one person was killed in an afternoon wreck in Waynesville on Wednesday.

It happened on Dellwood Road and Highway 276 just before 6 p.m.

Troopers say a white Lexus was turning left onto US-19 when an Xterra crashed into it causing it to flip. In the process, it hit a black car waiting at the light, causing it to spin and go in the opposite direction it was facing.

Colby Shelton was in the black car.

“I’m stopped. We have a red light and all of a sudden, just boom,” Shelton said.

He says he eventually put on the brakes, coming to a stop next to Jennifer Phillips.

“This car over here in the grass [the Xterra] came around the corner really fast. The white car then flipped multiple times. The black car turned. It didn’t flip, but turned and then ended up right next to my car,” Phillips said.

She went on to say Shelton’s car was so close to her, she could touch it

Dellwood Road was closed in the area in both directions after the wreck. The road reopened around 7:45 p.m.

Troopers say those three cars were not the only ones involved in a wreck with the Xterra.

A few minutes earlier, the SUV hit two other cars, troopers said, sparking a call to 911 and the reason a number of law enforcement agencies were on the scene so quickly.

Troopers believe the driver of the Xterra suffered from a medical condition that contributed to the crash, but it is still under investigation.
