The State Highway Patrol reported The Outer Banks Voice that the women, named as Frances Brinn and Janice Bateman, were involved in a collision with a pickup vehicle just before noon on June 27 while they were traveling down U.S. 64 close to the Pirate’s Cove Marina in Manteo.

Highway Patrol Sgt. D.C. Pridgen told The Virginian-Pilot that the 82-year-olds “lived right around the corner from each other” and that they had been “best friends for decades.” Pridgen remarked, “They’d been fishing.” “They made excellent fishing partners.” According to officials, all five occupants of the pickup vehicle were unharmed and lived to tell about it to the outlet. No one connected to the deadly collision has been charged.

According to her obituary, Bateman was “a loving mother and devoted grandmother” who had four children and nineteen grandchildren. She was “an avid fisherman who cherished family gatherings, especially while cooking Sunday dinners” and “found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life.” As of June 30, afternoon, there doesn’t seem to be an obituary accessible for Brinn. The island of Manteo is situated on Roanoke, approximately 190 miles east of Raleigh.
