Sad News: 8 Walnut Creek school children killed in a brutal car crash

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KRON) — A stretch of Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek was shut down Thursday and early Friday after an early morning crash killed a teenager, according to the Walnut Creek Police Department.

The driver, an 18-year-old woman identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner as Saniya Banga, of Pittsburg, was killed in the solo-vehicle crash which occurred around 1 a.m., authorities said. A male passenger was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two were driving from Pittsburg to Danville, police said, and traveling between 60 and 80 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The vehicle drove over a median and slammed into a power pole and tree. At the scene, a black car was found flipped upside down with severe damage, and a power pole toppled into the street.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the fatal collision, and that the two were drinking before leaving Pittsburg.

Ygnacio Valley Road between North Broadway and North Civic Drive was closed off throughout Thursday and into early Friday morning as crews remained at the site of the deadly crash. Both directions reopened just before 4:30 a.m. Friday.
