Dave Mustaine Reveals Why He Never Got Into Jimmy Page, Says Led Zeppelin ‘Weren’t Playing Good’ Near Their End

Dave Mustaine revealed why he never got into Jimmy Page as an artist, and said that Led Zeppelin wasn’t “playing good” near their end.

In 1976, Led Zeppelin released a concert film titled “The Song Remains the Same,” followed by a live soundtrack of the same name. In the years that followed, the members of Zeppelin expressed disappointment in the live album, stating it didn’t wasn’t the band’s best presentation. Four years later, drummer John Bonham passed away, and the band couldn’t continue.

In an interview with AXS TV, Mustaine reflected on Led Zeppelin’s last days, drawing on the live album as an example. The Megadeth legend noted that Led Zeppelin’s performance during those days was poor compared to their prime (transcribed by Ultimate Guitar):

“I remember when Led Zeppelin came around. It was the last time that they toured while John Bonham was alive. And I had heard ‘The Song Remains the Same’ live album, and I thought, ‘These guys aren’t playing good anymore.'”

Mustaine continued, noting that he could never get into Jimmy Page:

“Who am I to say shit? You know, I’m some little wet-behind-the-ears guitar-playing kid that’s just starting, and Jimmy’s the Dark Prince. I had my reasons, and he wasn’t playing good, so I didn’t go, ‘Great record. Love this record. Love this band.'”

Further, Mustaine noted that he had difficulties connecting with the guitarist:

“It’s funny though, I’ve never really been able to make a connection with Jimmy. We’ve talked several times. I know he’s a friendly person, but just never been able to connect with him.”
