A man is dead and a woman was injured after a motorcycle crash in a Lakes Region town, authorities said.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said before 7 p.m. on Thursday, deputies, Stuart’s Ambulance Service and Tuftonboro Fire/EMS Department responded to a reported motorcycle crash on Route 109 near the Abenaki Tower.
When responders got there, they found John O’Brien, 55, of Tuftonboro unconscious with significant injuries, authorities said. A passenger, a 42-year-old woman of Maine was injured but conscious.
O’Brien and the woman were taken to Huggins Hospital. O’Brien died from his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital, authorities said.

The woman was taken by air ambulance to Concord Hospital because of the seriousness of her injures, authorities said.

O’Brien’s motorcycle went down on it’s side, slid off the road hitting a utility pole and a number of large rocks before coming to a rest, authorities said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation but authorities said it doesn’t appear to have been weather, unfamiliarity with the roadway or mechanical failure.
