Zermatt, Switzerland – A raging wildfire has swept through the picturesque Swiss Alps town of Zermatt, threatening the lucrative tourist season and forcing evacuations.

The blaze, which began early yesterday morning, has already consumed hundreds of acres of land and is spreading rapidly due to strong winds and dry conditions.

 

“It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Zermatt Mayor, Romy Biner. “We’re doing everything we can to contain the fire, but it’s proving to be a challenge.”

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of several neighborhoods, with over 1,000 residents and tourists relocated to safety.

 

The famous Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn railway, a major tourist attraction, has been shut down, and multiple hiking trails and mountain excursions have been cancelled.

Zermatt’s tourist season, which generates millions of dollars in revenue, is now under threat.

 

“This is a disaster for our town,” said local business owner, Markus Wiederkehr. “We rely heavily on tourism, and if the fire isn’t brought under control soon, it could be catastrophic.”

Swiss firefighters, aided by Italian and French teams, are battling the blaze.

 

“We’re working tirelessly to contain the fire, but it’s a complex operation,” said Fire Chief, Urs Jenny.
