A 28-year-old Portland man drowned in Sebago Lake on Sunday, according to the Maine Warden Service.
Ahmed Doale was on a boat with another person around 8:25 p.m. when their boat broke down and drifted toward shore in a deep area of the lake near the mouth of the Songo River.
Doale got out of the boat to push it away from the shore and as he was pushing it away, he stepped into deep water, according to the warden service. He did not know how to swim, went underwater and never surfaced.
Witnesses called 911 and several local and state law enforcement officials looked for him until 10:15 p.m.
On Monday morning, the warden service began diving to look for Doale and recovered his body around 9:15 a.m.
