West Texas woman charged with capital murder in death of her newborn child

ODESSA, Texas (KWTX) – A West Texas woman was arrested after the Odessa Police Department says she caused the death her newborn child.

Yanira Prado, 22, is charged with capital murder.

On Oct. 9, police say officers were sent to the 2900 block of West 6th in Odessa.

When officers arrived on scene, police say they found a recently born infant dead in a toilet at the residence.

The mother of the infant, identified as Prado, was taken to the hospital, according to police.

Throughout the investigation, police say investigators found multiple aspects of the death suspicious, but waited until a complete autopsy was performed to come to a conclusion.

On Dec. 6, police say investigators receive the autopsy report which revealed the infant was born at full term.

The autopsy report, in addition to evidence found at the scene, revealed that the infant was born alive and breathing, police allege.

Police say the cause of death of the infant was determined to be asphyxia and the investigation was upgraded to a homicide.

Prado was subsequently arrested and charged in the incident.

Prado was booked into jail and is being held on a $1 million bond.
