A pedestrian was taken to the hospital Thursday after they were hit while crossing the street outside the West Garage at approximately 9 a.m.

The UMass Boston Police Department blocked University Drive West, the road that runs in front of the garage, while paramedics attended the victim — a UMass Boston student — and officers documented the scene.

“The individual was transported to the hospital for treatment and to ensure their wellbeing. We extend our best wishes to this member of our university community,” Communications Director DeWayne Lehman wrote.

The UMBPD cleared the scene and reopened the road at approximately 10 a.m.

Wrote Lehman, “In light of this incident, the university is reviewing and will evaluate the precautions and prevention efforts around the crosswalk between the West Garage and the Service and Supply building to prevent future similar incidents.”

The university told students about the crash Monday afternoon in an email to the campus mailing list from Chief of Police Stacey Lloyd and Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance Kathleen Kirleis.

Over the weekend, traffic cones lined the center of the road on both sides of the crosswalk in front of the West Garage. According to the email, there will be a police presence along University Drive West going forward.

The email reminds drivers to stay alert, adhere to posted speed limits and stop for pedestrians. It also reminds pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers before crossing and to cross only at marked crosswalks.
