Woman saves man, but his 2-year-old son dies in fiery OBX crash
DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A woman has been charged in last week’s fiery crash on the Outer Banks that killed a two-year-old and severely injured his father.
The Highway Patrol says just after 8:00 a.m. Thursday, two vehicles crashed on the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge on U.S. 64.
Officials say 43-year-old Brent Jones of Manns Harbor was driving east on Highway 64 in a 1991 Mustang when it broke down in the lane.
29-year-old Elizabeth Moran of Columbia was driving a 2023 GMC Acadia east and crashed into the back of the Mustang, causing it to catch fire, according to officials.
Troopers say Moran was able to pull Jones out of the Mustang but couldn’t get his 2-year-old child, Barrett, out of the vehicle before it became completely engulfed in flames.
The toddler died at the scene.
The Highway Patrol says Brent Jones was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Moran was taken to Outer Banks Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was charged with failure to reduce speed and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
