Daren Sammy named West Indies head coach across all formats

Already overseeing the white-ball teams, he will take over the Test side, succeeding Jamaican Andre Coley

Daren Sammy has been appointed head coach of the West Indies men’s cricket teams across all formats, starting in April 2025.

Sammy, who has led the T20I and ODI teams since May 2023, will take charge of the Test side after the conclusion of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) campaign. He will replace Jamaican coach Andre Coley, who was appointed head coach of the Test team in May 2023.

Coley’s final series as head coach will be the two-match tour of Pakistan, scheduled from January 16 to 28, 2025.

The announcement was made by Cricket West Indies (CWI) director of cricket Miles Bascombe during a press briefing in St Vincent on Monday.

“After our current World Test Championship campaign, we are going to expand Mr Sammy’s role to encompass all formats,” Bascombe said. “So, when we host Australia next summer, Daren Sammy will be the head coach of all senior men’s teams. I want to take this opportunity to thank Andre Coley, who has served well. He still has to complete his World Test Championship campaign in Pakistan, and he will have our full support.”

Coley has overseen a challenging period for the team, which currently sits at the bottom of the WTC points table. Under his leadership, the West Indies recorded two Test wins, two draws, and seven losses, including a dramatic eight-run victory over Australia in Brisbane earlier this year.

Sammy, 40, expressed both surprise and enthusiasm about his expanded role. “It’s always an honour to represent West Indies in any format or position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting,” Sammy said. “Coaching was never something I saw myself doing, but I must admit that as it’s gone on, I’ve developed a much stronger passion and love for the job. “I believe in processes, something we’ve been able to implement in the white-ball formats. With this new role, I’ve already mapped out some areas and processes that we’ll need to follow for success in Test cricket. I’m a patient man, and once I trust that process and understand the requirements from the director of cricket, the plan gets into action.”

Since taking over the T20I and ODI teams, Sammy has overseen significant improvements. The West Indies have won 15 of 28 ODIs and four of seven bilateral series. In T20Is, they have claimed four home series victories, including wins against India, England, and South Africa, although they have struggled in away series. Sammy’s T20I record stands at 20 wins from 35 matches overall.
