FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — Three people were killed when a plane crashed earlier this month on the property of Vulcan Materials, East Forsyth Quarry, 2874 Highway 66 South Kernersville, NC. A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said the plane left Sarasota, Fla. and was headed to Piedmont Triad International (PTI) in Greensboro.
According to the preliminary report, the airplane was being radar vectored by air traffic control to approach PTI following a previous unsuccessful approach.
The report also details what four different witnesses say the saw. One described the airplane as “very low” in the sky and was in a “sharp left turn” toward the west. Another witness said the airplane,”…looked as if it were a trick plane practicing stunts or else someone trying to stabilize the plane, but continuing to overcorrect as the nose would go down them up and the wings would go from right to left and back, but never stabilize.”
The pilot made an emergency call to PTI moments before the crash occurred. The details of the call have not been released.
Forsyth County 911 Center said they received the call around 12:06pm about a plane crash. Dispatchers said the plane is a single engine and it crashed in a rock quarry. Smoke and fire were reported after the crash, dispatchers say.
The plane was a Beechcraft A36 plane. The Beechcraft “Bonanza” is a six-seater, propeller engine plane; a very common plane for private flying.
