
VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI — An 8-year-old girl was killed when an SUV rear-ended the Amish buggy she was riding in, police said.
A Ford SUV, driven by a 31-year-old Mattawan woman, was traveling north when it crashed into the buggy around 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, on CR 215 near 60th Avenue in Lawrence Township, the Michigan State Police said.
The horse also died from injuries in the crash, police said.
The buggy was carrying two people — a 12-year-old boy, who was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition, and an 8-year-old girl, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the SUV was arrested and taken to jail on suspicion of operating under the influence of an unknown substance, MSP said.
The three people in the SUV were not injured.
The crash remains open pending further investigation, MSP said.
