The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) says 40-year-old Stephen A. Zmolek Jr was killed when the tractor-trailer he was driving ran off the road, overturned, and caught fire.
According to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), most of the gasoline from the incident burned. However, the contractor set up booms along the drainage ditch to collect any gasoline that may have been spilled.
The department said no sheen or odor was present at an unnamed tributary near the scene and no dead fish were observed.
ADEM said water was supplied by the local fire department to flush any gasoline that may have accumulated in the storm drain.Approximately 2000 gallons of water used to flush the storm drain was collected and placed into containers.
120 yards of contaminated soil were excavated by the contractor. The booms will be replaced as necessary and monitored after the next few rain events.
The replacement of the excavated material with new fill dirt and laying in the new grass for the median was expected to begin today.
