A tourist died on Friday after falling approximately 70 feet off a cliff in New York’s Minnewaska State Park.

Nur Aisyah Binte MD Akbar had been hiking on Beacon Hill Trail with her husband, Abdul Rauf Bin Mohd Said, when they stopped to take photos at the cliff’s edge, and she lost her footing, the New York State Police said in a press release.

The department said that her husband, 41, called 911, and troopers from State Police Ellenville were dispatched to the area at approximately 1:06 pm. The NYS Park Police, Park Operations Staff, and NYS DEC Forest Rangers also responded to the scene along with “various Fire and EMT personnel.”

According to the press release, the New York State Police Aviation helped hoist Binte MD Akbar, 39, out of the area, and she was transported to Ellenville Regional Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

While the incident remains under investigation, Bin Mohd Said shared his recollection of what happened in a lengthy Facebook post that included a video from their hike.

“Right after Ais fell off the cliff, I rushed forward, slipped, but didn’t fall off the cliff. (Believe me, I wished it had been me). I screamed for help at the top of my lungs, and three sisters, who heard my cries, rushed over to my spot with their father and aunt,” he wrote in his post.
