Man, 61, killed in boating accident on Percy Priest Lake identified

UPDATE (Sept. 19) – Officials have identified the 61-year-old Murfreesboro man killed in a boating accident last week.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency TWRA) says the body of Gary Marcel was found downstream of hisaluminum v-hull boat on Sept. 13.

 

 

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) – A man is dead after a boating accident over the weekend on the West Fork of the Stones River and Percy Priest Lake in Rutherford County.

 

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reports officers were made aware of the missing person around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

 

Officers found an unoccupied aluminum v-hull boat in the West Fork area of Percy Priest when they responded.

 

Officers then conducted a search and found the body of the 61-year-old mandownstream of the vessel. He was not wearing a lifejacket, TWRA confirms.

 

Tennessee now has a total of 23 boating-related fatalities this year. This incident remains under investigation.

Last week, “The Boss,” a large 650 pound grizzly bear known to have eaten a black bear and survive being struck by a train, forced some homeowners to cut down their fruit trees after it showed up several days in a row to munch on crab apples, CBC reported.

 

Titchener told Reuters that fatal attacks by grizzlies are extremely rare with only 14% of attacks worldwide leading to fatalities. While it’s not clear what prompted this attack, Titchener said most bear attacks occur because of surprise encounters.
