In his statement, Gardner referred to the incident as “a senseless act of violence.”
The mayor stated: “While the family was asleep, gunshots rang out, and a 2-year-old child was struck in the face by gunfire. The child was rushed to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with the child and the family during this unimaginably difficult time.
“This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence that continues to affect our communities far too often. The investigation is actively ongoing, and we are working with law enforcement to identify those responsible. Let me be clear: when the perpetrator is found, they must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“I am angry—and we all should be. These repeated acts of senseless violence have no place in our neighborhoods. We must come together as a community to demand better and to work tirelessly to make our homes and streets safer for every child and every family.
“This must stop.”
