3 dead after concrete transport truck crashes on I-75 in Sarasota, all lanes reopened

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Three people have died after a crash involving a cement mixer on Interstate 75 in Sarasota.

 

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the roadway at the exit for Fruitville Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol said three people were killed and at least two others were rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital as trauma alerts.

 

The wreck happened at mile marker 210 around 7:20 a.m.

 

Seven people were involved in the crash, according to a press release from FHP.

 

According to FHP, the driver of the cement truck mixer, Joseph Lydic, 50 of Sarasota, Joseph Pontillo of Sarasota, and Jose Leal, 56 of Cape Coral all died in the accident.

Angela Blase, 55, of Venice, Elizabeth Gunn, 57, of Sarasota, and Jesse Pillinger, 21, of Charlotte, were listed as victims who survived, according to FHP.

 

Troopers continue to piece together the chain of events that caused the crash. Charges are pending in this case following completion of the crash investigation.

 

All lanes have since reopened to traffic.
