Woman miraculously escapes with minor injuries after car flattened by semi-truck

A woman miraculously escapes with minor injuries after her car was flattened by semi-truck.

Troopers are calling it a miracle after a woman walked away with only minor injuries after a horrific collision Tuesday morning with a big rig.

The 46-year-old woman’s car was crushed by a tractor-trailer that came to a rest on top of her Nissan Altima while the vehicles were traveling on the Skagit River Bridge.

“It is nothing short of a miracle in my opinion. I don’t know how she survived this,” said Washington State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant. “She is the luckiest unlucky woman. I mean unlucky to be in a situation like that but incredibly fortunate to have survived it.”

Some say it was a miracle or divine intervention perhaps with guardian angels watching over her. While others may contend it was just pure luck.

State Patrol troopers said whatever it was, it is still unbelievable that the driver, who was not immediately identified, walked away from her car after it was reduced to a pancake of mangled metal.

“There is no explanation to why she’s alive,” Oliphant said. “Let alone (only with) minor injuries.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer was cited for following too closely, a ticket that carries a $189 fine, authorities said.

According to investigators, the victim was driving when a truck in front of her slowed down, prompting her to reduce her car’s speed as well.

But troopers said the unidentified driver of the big rig behind her did not adjust his rate of travel, smashing inter her car from behind before driving on top of it.

The force of the collision folded the Altima in half and the truck landed on top of it, startling other motorists.

“Just a loud bang,” said Mike Dewitt, who saw the crash that had first responders rushing to the scene. “Everybody (in) my family (was) like there’s no way, no way somebody survived that.”

The State Patrol shut down both directions of Interstate 5 after the crash, and quickly called for a tow truck. Luckily for the victim, one was nearby and just down the street.

When a trooper approached the car, he couldn’t believe what he heard.

“He walked up (and) he walked around the car and he heard, ‘Help, help,'” Oliphant said. “And he said, ‘Oh my goodness!’”

Troopers say the tow truck lifted the front end of the semi off the car, then the woman was able to crawl out of a little gap where her passenger-side window was.

“She was able to pull herself out with her own power,” Oliphant said. “Which is incredible.”
