The 2026 MLB All-Star festivities are coming to Citizens Bank Park for the first time in the stadium’s 22 year history. Bryce Harper has 20 home runs on the season and an OPS of .908. The Home Run Derby is literally taking place in his own backyard.
And somehow he’s still not sure he’s doing it.
What Harper Actually Said
Asked about his participation in the derby, Harper didn’t exactly jump at the opportunity the way Philadelphia fans were hoping. “We’ll see. Last time I did it, I won and I said I’d never do it again. I don’t know. We’ll see how I’m feeling,” he said.
Which is polite sports speak for “probably not” dressed up in just enough uncertainty to keep everyone guessing.
But here’s the part that’s actually kind of wholesome buried inside all the ambiguity. Harper’s hesitation isn’t just about his own readiness — it’s about his dad. The designated thrower for his previous derby run, and apparently the only person Harper wants on the other end of that pitching machine.
“I don’t have anyone to throw to me as well. My dad hasn’t thrown in a long time, so I don’t really want to do it without him. It’s a moment for me and him,” Harper said. “Obviously I know the fans want me to do it. I’ll take that into account, but we’ll see how much oomph I have going out there and doing it.”
A father-son moment. At home. In front of 45,000 screaming Phillies fans. If that doesn’t convince him nothing will.
The Schwarber Factor
Here’s a subplot worth watching. Kyle Schwarber has already confirmed he’s participating in the derby — no hesitation, no “we’ll see,” just a straight up yes. And there’s history between these two in this exact competition.
Back in 2018 it was Harper who beat Schwarber in the final round, knocking in 19 home runs to take the trophy. Eight years later Schwarber has the chance to run it back on the same stage — and you’d think he’d love nothing more than to settle that score with his teammate watching from the dugout.
Whether that’s enough to goad Harper into entering is another question entirely. But if anyone can talk him into it, a teammate with unfinished derby business probably has a shot.
Should He Just Do It
Honestly? Yes. The answer is yes. Harper is hitting the ball as well as anyone in the National League right now, the event is happening literally at his home stadium and the fans who have cheered for him every single night this season deserve to see their guy put on a show under the All-Star lights.
Get dad warmed up, call him in from wherever he is, and let Philadelphia have its moment.
The fans want it. The stage is set. The only question left is whether Bryce Harper wants it too. ⚾🔥
