Firefighter charged in Nags Head bicycle crash that killed planning board member
NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina firefighter has been charged after a fire truck struck and killed a bicyclist earlier this month.
The Highway Patrol says Lt. Trever Tilley was charged with unsafe movement as a result of the December 7th crash in Nags Head.
Troopers say 74-year-old Gary Ferguson was riding a bicycle around 4:45 p.m. illegally in the pedestrian crosswalk on U.S. 158 when he was hit by the fire truck as it was making a turn from East Epstein Drive.
The Nags Head man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died on Thursday. Ferguson was a member of the town’s planning board for several years.
Troopers say both the bicyclist and the firefighter contributed to the crash and charges were brought after consulting with the district attorney.
