Four people perish in their cars as they tried to flee Western Australia’s ‘worst ever’ bushfire – while authorities brace for a ‘day from hell’ around the country

Two women and two men have died trying to escape bushfires near Esperance in Western Australia in their vehicles, with one man perishing as he attempted to help his neighbours flee.

WA Police on Wednesday confirmed four people died in the North Cascade fire – 60 kilometres north of Esperance. The people are thought to have been travelling in two separate cars and it is believed they may have crashed in the process.

‘I understand there was a single male occupant in one vehicle and three other deceased in another vehicle,’ state Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said

According to reports, one of the men who perished in the blaze was a local farmer who had been attempting to direct his neighbours away from the deadly flames that were about to engulf their properties.

Resident Andy Johnston told ABC News that the selfless farmer made sure other members of the community had escaped before attempting to flee himself and was last been seen stopping to warn someone who had been driving towards the inferno.
