James Maddison says Tottenham Hotspur have shown in their last two performances that they have plenty of character, while also stressing that the team is losing its reputation as “soft”.

Although Tottenham had a good start to the season and played excellently, many predicted Ange Postecoglou’s team would lose to the Emirates in the North London Derby.

Some experts predicted before the match that the Lilywhites could collapse and become victims of a rout (Sportskeeda).

However, despite being behind twice in the match, Spurs showed bravery to come back and win a well-deserved point.

Maddison says Spurs are proving everyone wrong

Although the away team lost the ball in a number of dangerous situations in the first 30 minutes, they did not panic and continued to play from behind and were eventually rewarded.

Maddison believes Sunday’s performance and late turnaround against Sheffield United proves this Tottenham team is made of tough stuff.

The 26-year-old told talkSPORT (24/09/23 via The Athletic):

“Neutrals talk about Tottenham,” they often say; soft, weak, bottled up, Spursy, all that bullshit. I think the last few weeks suggest we may be moving in a slightly different direction.

Narratives are often more powerful than facts and there is no doubt that the ‘Spursy’ tag will be unfairly thrown at Tottenham the next time they fail to win a game that they are expected to.

Putting that to one side, one cannot help but love Maddison, given the way he has embraced everything about the club so quickly after arriving. Just from his body language on Sunday, one could see that he understood what the derby meant to Spurs fans.
