Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham’s decision to allow Dane Scarlett to join Ipswich Town on loan could be a breakthrough this time next year. Making a real impression on the Spurs boss in pre-season after returning to the club following a loan spell at Portsmouth, the star scored in Spurs’ friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk before making 45 minutes of play on Tuesday night in Carabao. Fulham draw.
Despite appearing at Craven Cottage in midweek, this appears to be his last appearance at Tottenham for a year after signing a season-long loan deal to Ipswich on Thursday. This looks like a great move for the player, especially as head coach Kieran McKenna has built a very impressive team at Portman Road and they are currently flying high in the Championship.

Scarlett has all the skills necessary to succeed in England’s second division, despite spending the second half of last season on and off with League One club Portsmouth due to a change in management. He will have to work hard to establish himself as a regular at Ipswich, but moving to a team that is confident after their promotion might be the turning point in his career.

If indeed his time in Suffolk proves to be a real success and the goals flow, the 19-year-old could very well be competing for game time at Tottenham come next August. That’s how Postecoglou sees it anyway.

And let’s face it, Ipswich are a good side, they play good football, they’ve started the season well and he’ll have to fight for his position there. It is not like anything will be given.

“We know the Championship is a tough league so, if he can go there, play a significant number of games and perform well, for us that is exactly what we want from these loan periods, so come pre-season next year he is advanced where he then becomes somebody who is competing for a first-team squad [spot].”

All at Tottenham will be hoping he can follow in the footsteps of current Spurs first-team star Oliver Skipp. Making a loan move to Norwich City at the beginning of the 2020/21 season and playing 45 of their 46 league games as they lifted the Championship title, the midfielder returned to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was a first-team regular under both Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

Ipswich Town manager McKenna is well aware of Scarlett after praising him as “one of the best young strikers in world football” following the Tractor Boys’ victory against Portsmouth in October. Although he could have to start out on the bench since he is not yet match-ready, the Ipswich manager has already said that his new recruit will be in the squad on Saturday against Cardiff.

All eyes are going to be on Scarlett, who received his first England Under-21 call-up on Friday, over the course of the season and the loan deal could turn out to be a very shrewd move for all parties concerned. If he does come back to Tottenham next summer and challenge for a regular spot in the squad after reaching new levels at Ipswich, the highly-rated striker could save Daniel Levy, Postecoglou and Tottenham millions in the transfer market as a result.
