Ian Wright claims Tottenham must be considered Premier League contenders based on their early season form.

New manager Ange Postecoglou has changed the mood at the ailing north London club and helped boost the spirit of the team, which has produced five wins and two draws in his seven games at the helm.

The former Celtic boss considered the summer departure of Harry Kane and rejuvenated Son Heung-min, while the additions of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario all proved shrewd signings.

Saturday’s late win over Liverpool brought some luck amid the controversy surrounding Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal, but another three points only strengthened the belief that Postecoglou’s side can exceed expectations. And while Arsenal are seen as Manchester City’s main challengers this season, Wright has urged Spurs to take inspiration from Leicester’s unlikely title run in 2016 in their bid to shake up the established order. Wright told Premier League Productions: “Do what they’re doing, nobody expected Tottenham, especially a new manager, to do what they’re doing at the start of the season. Right now they’ve got confidence and momentum and you just have to focus on the next one game. If you look back when Leicester won it, that’s all Leicester did.

“They just won a few games and people said we’ll see what they do when they play this team and that team and beat them. “People said Tottenham started well, let’s see when they play Arsenal and Liverpool.” Bam, look where they are.

“It’s about momentum and confidence and if you have that and you keep winning against the teams you should be beating, if you keep going and don’t injure Phil and Maddison, they’ll have success. That’s where the pressure comes from.

“At the moment I think the top five teams are all title contenders and as long as you can stay close to Manchester City then of course you are a contender.”
