It remains an open situation”- Romano drops transfer update on Chelsea star Tottenham wanted this summer

Romano drops transfer update on Chelsea star Conor Gallagher after Tottenham Hotspur pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur have held talks to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea this summer, according to CaughtOffside (h/t Football.London) in August.

The England midfielder also clearly attracted interest from West Ham United, but remains at Stamford Bridge. With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2025, Fabrizio Romano believes there is a possibility he will be sold if he does not sign a new contract.

Citing the example of Mason Mount, where the Englishman was sold to Manchester United after entering the final year of his contract, Romano told CaughtOffside’s YouTube channel The Debrief:

“…Over the summer transfer window, there were many possibilities with West Ham, with Tottenham. It was never that advanced. It never reached the advanced stages like okay, he’s going to leave, but it was negotiated and it was discussed.

He added:

“He is very happy at Chelsea. He wants to fight for his place there, so, I think it remains an open situation. We have to see what’s going to happen in the next two or three months, what is going to be the impact of the player on the pitch because his contract expires in the summer of 2025.

“…for Chelsea, the message is very clear, it’s exactly what they did with Mason Mount. So they want contracts to be extended, otherwise they are prepared to sell players

Gallagher is a player we could use in the team. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seems to have lost Ange Postecoglou’s trust (if there was any in the first place).

Giovani Lo Celso’s future at Spurs hangs in the balance, as it has in recent seasons. Yves Bissouma has flourished under the new manager but we can still exploit depth in this area.

James Maddison is obviously an untouchable in this team and while Pape Matar Sarr could blossom into a fine midfielder, Gallagher brings with him Premier League experience of playing at Chelsea and Crystal Palace on a regular basis in the last couple of seasons.

If he doesn’t pen a new deal, Tottenham can be optimistic about a modest fee. But as Chelsea showed with Mount, whom they sold to Manchester United for an initial £55million, they could drive a hard bargain even if it means they risk losing a player for free.
