Will Rex Ryan soon have a coaching gig again?

Speaking on his show on Monday, Pat McAfee said there are rumors that Ryan will be hired as defensive coordinator for the Broncos. MacAfee and Ryan both work at ESPN, but MacAffe says he is hearing this from around the league, not from the network.

“There’s rumblings right now, rumors, rumors,” MacAfee said. “I don’t want to talk about it too loud because who knows what’s real and what isn’t, but the Broncos might be making a change at DC, allegedly. I don’t know when, I’m just getting words, messages sent to me … Rex Ryan, potentially.”

Ryan interviewed for the Denver defensive coordinator position this offseason and afterwards implied that the team did not meet his contract demands.

Denver defense kept the Kansas City Chiefs to 19 points on Thursday, but that was the units’ best showing in what has been a poor year. Vance Joseph, who was Broncos head coach in 2017 and 2018, is currently serving as defensive coordinator.

The Broncos have given up a league-leading 440.3 yards to their opponents in 2023, and their defensive struggles were on display when they gave up 70 points to a dominant Miami offense in Week 3.

Ryan last worked in the NFL in 2016 as head coach of the Buffalo Bills and was Jets head coach from 2009 to 2014. He served as defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens from 2005 to 2008, helping them win Super Bowl XXXV, 34-7, over the New York Giants. In 2017, he joined ESPN as an analyst.
