The Cincinnati Bengals placed the franchise tag on wide receiver Tee Higgins, ensuring he doesn’t hit NFL free agency. However, the highly gifted offensive weapon will generate trade interest this offseason and the type of return could entice Cincinnati.
Following a disappointing 2023 NFL season, the Bengals are primarily hoping that a healthy Joe Burrow will allow them to be Super Bowl contenders next fall. However, there are glaring holes on both sides of the roster and with Higgins salary in 2024 fully guaranteed, it eats up a majority of their cap space.
It’s led to speculation that Higgins, Cincinnati’s No. 2 receiver, could be moved this offseason. The Bengals have needs to address on both sides of the ball, including offensive tackle and the defensive line. With the club already planning to extend Ja’Marr Chase’s contract next year, it makes some sense to trade Higgins for draft capital and then use it on a bigger need.
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, executives around the league believe if the Bengals put Higgins on the trade block there will be teams offering an early second-round pick or potential a first-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
This is considered to be one of the deepest and most talented receiver classes in years, which could provide even more incentive for Cincinnati. The Bengals could use their original first-round pick on a defensive tackle, the pick acquired from trading Higgins on an offensive tackle and then find a receiver replacement in Round 2.
