The most recent Aston Villa news comes in the wake of concerns that VAR should have reversed Liverpool’s opening goal against Villa due to an offside.

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, said that it was correct to award Liverpool’s opening goal against Aston Villa even though there were claims that it should have been disallowed for offside.

At Anfield, Dominik Szoboszlai scored the game’s first goal just three minutes in, as the Reds defeated Unai Emery’s team 3-0. Before it was ruled that the goal was legitimate, the Video Assistant Referee checked it out.

Mohamed Salah was positioned in front of Villa keeper Emi Martinez when the shot was taken in an offside position, according to replays of the goal. But Gallagher gave an explanation of why he thinks the correct judgement was made in an interview with Sky Sports’ Ref Watch.

Can the shot be seen by the custodian? I believe he can, yes. Salah approaches the ball or is he standing close to it? No, he replied.

They believe the shot will go into the far corner and that the custodian will be helpless to stop it. This strategy has been employed all season to interpret that law, and it was demonstrated earlier in the campaign when [Pervis] Estupinan scored, [Danny] Welbeck was in an offside position, the same thing happened, and the goal was awarded against Wolves and Brighton.
