Former Millwall manager Gary Rowett was unable to prevent Birmingham City’s relegation to League One, as their fate was confirmed on the final day of the Championship season.

Rowett, who left the Lions in October, took over as temporary manager of the Blues in the closing parts of the season after Tony Mowbray took a leave of absence to obtain medical treatment.

Birmingham’s Paik Seung-ho scored in a 1-0 home win over Norwich, but other results mean the Midlands club will return to England’s third division for the first time since 1995.

Rowett stated, “The fans have played a huge role in trying to get us over the line, and we should have been well ahead before we scored.”

“I’m happy with the performance and with the outcome. However, when you don’t have control over the situation, you leave yourself vulnerable.

“And then you wait for the findings. At one point, the crowd caught wind of something, and we thought we would be back in business, but that wasn’t the case.

“When the dust settles, I still think there’s exciting times ahead here, if we can get it right on the pitch.”
