Joe Milton III’s college career is over.

Milton III, who started three games for Michigan in 2020 before transferring to Tennessee, announced Wednesday that he will opt out of the Citrus Bowl to prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Five-star freshman Nico Iamaleava will start the game against Iowa on Jan. 1.

A fifth-year senior, Milton thanked his coaches, teammates and fans in his announcement.

“Throughout my years here at Tennessee I’ve learned a lot. Becoming a man was the best part,” he wrote. “…Playing inside Club Neyland was amazing. The energy, the noise and especially running through the ‘T.’ I’m going to miss it all. Thanks Vol Nation for everything.

Milton III, 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, is considered by most draft analysts to be a Top 10 quarterback prospect due to his strong arm and mobility. But his college career was certainly a rollercoaster.

He began the pandemic-shortened 2020 season as Michigan’s starting quarterback but received criticism following a surprising 27-24 loss to rival Michigan State after which he admitted star Spartan linebacker Antjuan Simmons “wasn’t on my radar.”
As the season went on and the team struggled, Milton III slowly began losing playing time to Cade McNamara. He officially transferred to Tennessee in April 2021 where he was named the starter, but he was injured in the second game of the season and replaced by Hendon Hooker.
Hooker remained the starter in 2022, posting a Heisman worthy season and leading the Vols to an 11-2 record.
An injury to Hooker allowed Milton III to return as starter for the Vols’ Orange Bowl game against Clemson where Milton III passed for 251 yards and three touchdowns in a 31–14 victory to earn MVP honors.

Expectations were high for Milton III and the Tennessee offense in 2023, but the Vols stumbled to an 8-4 record. Milton III finished with 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns and 5 interceptions while gaining 299 yards and scoring 7 touchdowns on the ground.
