Hamilton dominated the turbo-hybrid era after making the switch to Mercedes in 2013, claiming six World Championship titles with the Silver Arrows to draw him level with Michael Schumacher in the record books and cement his name among the motorsport greats.

In an interview with the Dutch publication Formule1.NL, Hamilton was reminded of his previous pledge not to race into his forties. Asked whether or not this was still true, he replied: “And that is still possible. I have no set plan for the future. I still feel fit and still enjoy what I do. Meanwhile, I have learned that you should never say ‘never’ in life.”

The seven-time world champion then touched on his feelings toward the sport as he enjoys the twilight years of a glittering motorsport career. “I never thought that after such a long time in Formula One, I would still feel the same love for the sport,” he explained.

“It is a love-hate relationship though, at some times you love it more than at other times. I do think there will come a time when you will get tired of it. But the love is still there.”

Hamilton since the Abu Dhabi GP in 2021. Alongside a string of podium finishes, he ended his wait for a pole position in Hungary last season, pipping former title rival Max Verstappen to the top spot in qualifying.

Discussing the impact of such an achievement, Hamilton continued: “No matter how much you try to appreciate everything that comes your way; when the going gets tough, when you’ve had difficult times, that’s when you really appreciate it.
