Paul Merson has said that he was surprised to see Everton trade Alex Iwobi to Fulham for £22 million on the final day of the transfer window.

Following the player’s notification to the club that he will not be renewing his contract at the club past next summer, the Toffees traded the Nigerian international to Premier League rivals Fulham in a deal for £22 million including add-ons.

But according to Merson, who was speaking on Football Saturday on September 2nd, Everton should have kept him and taken the chance of losing him for free the next summer because he was so crucial to them.

He was the finest player on an underwhelming Everton team last season, he claimed.

“Everton cannot play in the Championship at the new stadium. Even though his contract expired the next summer, it was worthwhile to let him leave at the end of the season for no reason.

That surprised me.
