Oli McBurnie, Sheffield United’s striker, has been told to prepare for the “challenge” of facing Burnley this weekend following his red card earlier this season at Turf Moor. The Blades striker received two yellow cards in rapid succession for two aerial charges in a 5-0 defeat, which proved to be Paul Heckingbottom’s final game in command.

McBurnie could captain the Blades if he starts, having deputised at Brentford last weekend with John Egan, Chris Basham, and Jack Robinson all out injured, and both the striker and referee Anthony Taylor, who has issued a red card every 4.63 games he has officiated this season, have been warned not to fall foul of any attempts to wind up the Scottish international.

“It’s obviously a big game for him on Saturday,” Wilder remarked before of the visit of Vincent Kompany’s fellow strugglers. I think it’s crucial that it be refereed because I believe there was an agenda against him.

“He fell for the old three-card trick [at Turf Moor], hook line and sinker, and he has to make sure that he’s right for that challenge too.” Oli and Burnley have a history dating back to the previous season, which he must address.

“But he’s obviously a player who the younger players are paying attention to, both in terms of personality and approach towards the club. So, for me, giving him the armband was an easy decision. “I’m disappointed he didn’t get a result in his outing as captain.”

McBurnie scored twice for the Blades last season when they defeated eventual winners Burnley 5-2 at Bramall Lane, but lost 2-0 in the return leg at Turf Moor later that season after custodian Wes Foderingham was sent off. Burnley’s return to the Premier League was assured with that win, and United followed suit later that month, securing automatic promotion.
