A couple of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham players are closing in on a fifth yellow card of the season and the one-match ban that comes with it

The Premier League table is currently looking good for Tottenham fans after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool. Having claimed all three points in the dying moments of the match after Joel Matip curled Pedro Porro’s cross into the net, Spurs now sit second in the Premier League table after seven games.

Just one point behind Championship leaders Man City, the Lilywhites will go top of the Championship on Saturday if they win at Luton Town from the start. With Pep Guardiola’s side traveling to Arsenal the following day, Spurs could well enter the top flight’s second international break if results go their way.

First of all, though, Tottenham have to make sure they record a sixth league victory of the campaign by beating newly-promoted Luton Town. Ange Postecoglou’s men will be the outright favourites to win at Kenilworth Road but it will be a tough fixture with the Hatters registering their first Premier League win at Everton last time out.

Yves Bissouma will go into Saturday’s match in Bedfordshire under strict discipline after receiving his fourth yellow card of the season in the 2-1 win over Liverpool. His booking against the Red Devils means he is now one yellow card away from a one-match ban.

Premier League rules state that “any player who receives five yellow cards in his team’s first 19 Premier League matches shall be subject to a one-match suspension in the same competition.” Unless the Mali international can curb his yellow card tendencies after receiving a quarter of the team’s first seven Premier League matches of the 2023/24 campaign, it looks like Postecoglou and Spurs will have to push through him in a match. at some point in the not too distant future.

A yellow card against Luton will see the 27-year-old miss Spurs’ home game with Fulham on Monday October 23. As Spurs have big games coming up against Chelsea and Aston Villa in October 11, as well as Man City and Newcastle. United in early December, Postecoglou will not want to be without the in-form midfielder in any of these matches, although he will have the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp as options to joined the team in place of Bissouma.

Bissouma is not the only Tottenham player to receive 5 yellow cards in the Premier League this season. Destiny Udogie is next with three cautions, her latest yellow coming in the late win over Liverpool.

Tottenham then had five players receive two yellow cards in their first seven matches. Richarlison, James Maddison, Cristian Romero, Pape Matar Sarr and Ivan Perisic are among the players mentioned, although the Croatian will not be able to serve his one-match suspension until the 19th game of the season due to injury ACL would sideline him for most of the term.

Following the Luton Town fixture, Spurs face Fulham at home and Crystal Palace away once domestic football resumes after the latest international break. November then starts with Mauricio Pochettino making his return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as his Chelsea team make the short trip across the capital.
