Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has sent a classy message to Nottingham Forest youngster Sam Collins. The Reds U21s defeated the League One outfit 2-0 in the EFL Trophy last night.

Despite a memorable win for the young Forest team, the night ended on a sour note for midfielder Collins. He’s confirmed on Instagram today that he suffered a broken tibia in the closing stages of the contest.

It’s a huge blow for the young player who had made a good start to the 2023/24 campaign. At 20-years-old he will have been on the radar of Steve Cooper and now he will spend some time on the sidelines.

Simpson sends classy message to Forest gem Collins

After the game, Simpson was fuming with his team’s performance. They claimed a huge win at Bolton on Saturday but this was a case of two steps backwards for his team.

However, although he was disappointed with how his team had played, he was only in the mood to send his well wishes to the stricken Forest star who was stretchered off.

He told The News and Star: “You don’t like to see those things. I was concerned for Mox when he went in for it, I thought it was a dangerous tackle for both of them to go in for.

“I don’t think either of them have tried to do anything to each other, they’ve both just gone full-blooded. Obviously, our thoughts are with him and I hope he gets a speedy recovery from that. That’s the real downer on the night.”

Collins will hope for smooth recovery

This is bad news for the Forest youngster. He was tossed the captain’s armband last night and it will have been a proud moment for him against League One opposition.

The tough-tackling nature of the player makes this hard to take. He will probably make that tackle more times during his career and be lauded for his commitment to the cause.

This is a touch of class from Simpson though. He’s a real football man and it was a comment that typified the sort of man he is for him to speak about Collins after losing to Forest.

There isn’t really a quick fix to a broken leg. However, Collins will be hoping that things go as seamlessly as possible and he can be back playing before the season is out.
