After they went 5-12 last season in Russell Wilson’s maiden voyage with them, the Denver Broncos thought they had a real chance at redemption and returning to the playoffs this year.

After all, they had hired a proven head coach in Sean Payton and felt they had paid their dues.

Instead, they head into their Week 7 contest against the Green Bay Packers with a 1-5 record, and their situation seems unfixable.

Colin Cowherd said that the partnership of Wilson and Payton feels “like a dead end,” and he implied that the Broncos’ best move may be to trade Wilson by the start of next season.

Cowherd noted that the five-year, $245 contract extension the Broncos gave Wilson shortly after trading for him last offseason will kick in next season, and that trading him beforehand would allow them to recoup some flexibility under the salary cap.

He also implied that perhaps it would be best for them to finish with an awful record this year and draft either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, as either of them could be the solution.

However, it would take a lot more than either of them to solve what has been ailing Denver.

The team is last in points and total yards given up, and their offense hasn’t exactly been potent either.

Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy has been heavily discussed in trade rumors lately, and Cowherd feels giving him up for draft capital could be the first step in a revival for a Broncos franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs since it won the Super Bowl in the 2015 season.
