Danny Murphy acknowledged that he is unconcerned about Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool because he has already chosen the person he thinks would make the “perfect” replacement.

After Hansi Flick was fired following a 4-1 loss to Japan, the 56-year-old manager has been mentioned in connection with the open position with the Germany national team.

The Reds manager’s representative has been quick to remove himself from the claims, but it has inevitably sparked conjecture about potential candidates to take over at Anfield.

After a 30-year wait for an English top-flight trophy, Klopp’s tenure as manager has been one of the most fruitful in the legendary club’s illustrious history. He also added a sixth Champions League.

However, Murphy has already planned out who he thinks could step in if the worst happened to Liverpool fans and Klopp decided to go.

‘I think he plays great football, he looks a strong character, he’s learning his trade in this league with Brighton and doing it superbly well. I don’t see a better candidate.

‘Things change in football really quickly. So, the flavour of the month might be someone else this time next year,’ said the former England international. ‘But I think he’s (De Zerbi) the real deal.

‘There is something about him. After meeting him as well, (I can say) he’s got real gravitas. A real presence. And I love the way his teams play.

There is something about him. After meeting him as well, (I can say) he’s got real gravitas. A real presence. And I love the way his teams play.

But I don’t think Klopp will leave in the near future. He has a new crop of players and he seems excited about Liverpool’s start (to the season) as well as the promising start of some new signings.

De Zerbi has received widespread praise for his work since taking over from Graham Potter – perhaps struggling to fill those big boots on the south coast.

Arriving after the start of last season, the Italian inspired the Seagulls to European qualification for the first time in their history.

Coming into the Europa League – where they will face Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens – Brighton have recorded memorable wins over Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Interestingly, De Zerbi also has a brilliant record against Klopp, winning twice and drawing against the German coach in 3 matches, all taking place last season. Murphy believes De Zerbi is ‘the real deal’ and would be Klopp’s ideal successor at Anfield
